Jackie said “yes” to only one of the many pictures Tretick submitted, and that was of Caroline standing on the lawn, butterfly net in hand, with her back to the camera…. In her note to the photographer, Jackie wrote: “So many thanks for the marvelous pictures in the album … You are right—they are such good pictures…. It is partly because they are so good I must sadly tell you I just can’t give you permission to publish them.”

The Cuban missile crisis lasted thirteen days, October 16–28, 1962. The President did not inform the country until October 22 that the United States was on the precipice of war with Russia. Many of his secret meetings with advisors were held outside, away from the Oval Office where he frequently tape-recorded conferences and calls.

Thankfully for Stanley, he had come up with another idea that intrigued the President. In a memo to his editor, he proposed “a first-class picture book,” saying: “I think I could sell Kennedy on allowing me the access which would enable us to get more intimate photos than anyone else. His ‘sense of history,’ I think, would make him go for both the picture stories of individual events and the idea of an intimate photographic record of his administration.”
